“The masterclass will focus mainly on the art direction of Cartoon Saloon’s Song of the Sea, from its very early visual development stages all the way to the last steps of compositing and colour grading.
Though we will start by going over my first short film Old Fangs (12mins), and my music video Cecelia & Her Selfhood (6mins) to explain the creative context which led up to the art direction of Song of the Sea.”
Song of the Sea : Song of the Sea follows the story of a 10-year-old Irish boy named Ben who discovers that his mute sister Saoirse, whom he blames for the death of his mother, is a selkie who has to free faerie creatures from the Celtic goddess Macha.
Old Fangs : Accompanied by his two friends, a young wolf tries to remember his way through a forest, to the house of his father that he hasn’t seen since he was a child.
Cecelia & Her Selfhood : The film charts the development of a young man as he navigates his way through an impressionistic landscape in search of an elusive monster which is intent on destroying his childhood home.

Adrien, b. 1983, has studied 2D animation in the french school EMCA before moving to Ireland in 2004 to participate in the development of the animation studio Cartoon Saloon, until 2014. Adrien worked as background supervisor on their first feature film The Secret of Kells (2009), directed there his first professional short film Old Fangs (2010), and was the art director of their second Oscar nominated film, Song of the Sea (2014).
Adrien now lives in Paris, working on his second short film, Genius Loci, produced by Kazak.
