Turku is the home of Finnish animation. It is also the hometown of Turku Arts Academy, the school that has been selected as the best animation school in the world – twice. Therefore, it seemed only fitting that Turku should, once again, host an international festival for animated films.
Turku Animated Film Festival, TAFF, celebrates animation as an art form. By celebration we mean a continuous party from Thursday to Sunday. By art form we mean mostly animated short films. We dedicate the four festival days to films full of heart and soul. Besides the competition for the freshest animated short films from around the world, you will have a chance to experience the best recent Finnish animations, as well as special programming curated by our Creative Director Joni Männistö.
The films will be screened mostly in the theatres located in Manilla, an old industrial building by the river Aura, that has been turned into a creative complex and that will now transform into a spectacular festival venue. TAFF will also spread up and over the river to various locations in the city of Turku so festival visitors can also enjoy all the beautiful things Turku and the Finnish summer can provide.
For the filmmakers who make it to the competition, we have prepared a special treat: they get to stay their nights in a villa in the island of Ruissalo where they have the chance to go to a Finnish sauna and swim in the sea any time of the day.
There is now one month left to submit films for the competition – I want to wish everyone good luck!
See you in Turku in August!
All the best,
