10th TAFF has begun!
The tenth Turku Animated Film Festival has begun! The first day of the festival got off to a cheerful start yesterday, Wednesday, when the first animated films flashed across the screen at the Kino Kilta arthouse cinema. There were three screenings at the theater during the day: the day began with a special screening celebrating TAFF’s tenth anniversary, which brought together a collection of memorable works from throughout the festival’s history. This was followed by the first screening of the international competition and the national competition, after which directors Hannariina Moisseinen (Photographs Not Taken) and Heta Jokinen (Drawn in Water) discussed their works in a Q&A discussion.
The animation crowd arrived in large numbers. The evening was crowned by an outdoor screening organized jointly by TAFF and Kirjakahvila in the Brinkkala courtyard. Despite the cold weather, the courtyard was almost full as Norwegian Mats Grorud’s feature-length animated film The Tower (Tårnet, 2018) was screened.
Today on Thursday, the festivities continue at the traditional Manilla Culture Factory. The morning kicks off with the TAFF Pro program for professionals, with opening remarks by festival director Annika Dahlsten, followed by lectures by Samppa Kukkonen, director at the Turku-based animation studio Pyjama Films, and media artist Jukka Hautamäki. In the afternoon, there will also be a rare treat when artists Britt Al-Busultan and Natalia Koziel-Kalliomäki from Filmverkstaden, the analog film and photography center in Vaasa, present a performative lecture on expanded cinema.
In the morning, traditional TAFF Junior screenings for school groups will be held in Manilla, but in the afternoon, the doors of Manilla’s theaters will also open to the public. During the day, screenings 3 and 4 of the international competition and the international panorama screening will be shown. At the end of the second day of the festival, TAFF and Muu ry’s VR art exhibition States of Nature – Virtual Experiments will open at 17:00 in the media studio of the Art House Turku. The second day of the festival will conclude with the official opening gala of TAFF at the Manilla Culture Factory.
