Official competition selection of TAFF 2026

Exciting news for animators and all animation fans: The films for TAFF’s competition series have now been selected! A total of 72 high-quality films were chosen for the festival’s prestigious competition programme this year, of which 43 will compete in the international competition and 11 in the national competition. The lineup features a charming collection of films that strike a balance between technical mastery, experimentation, and inventive storytelling.

“This year’s theme reflects on fundamental questions. In animation, inanimate images and objects come to life in the most interesting and unusual ways, much like in our close relative, the puppet theater. Putting together the competition programs was, once again, a difficult puzzle to solve. The goal is to offer a diverse overview of contemporary animation that challenges, amuses, moves, and confuses the festival audience in all the right ways.” says TAFF’s Artistic Director Joni Männistö.

A rich selection of top-notch animations

The program brings together filmmakers from around the world: this year features a delightful array of new voices, whose works will be screened at TAFF for the first time. At the same time, the lineup also includes familiar filmmakers whose films have been celebrated in the festival spotlight before. The festival’s international and national competition films will compete for the coveted Grand Prix and Tough Eye awards. In addition, the Best National Film award will be awarded in the national competition series.

Alongside the main competition selection, films aimed at family audiences compete for the TAFF Junior award.

Both works by experienced filmmakers and student films are in the running for the awards. The festival will also present awards for Best Professional Film, Best Student Film, and the Audience Favorite.

Congratulations to all selected films!
